Default 1987 250x gearing, what to run?

Hello all, i have a 1987 250x and i dont know if i should run this on my quad. i have 20'' tires, 14t front and 38 rear right now. i was thinking dropping to 33 on the rear, i do a lot of long straight road riding, and as it is now i can top out 5th within 10 seconds, not even wide open either. Any opinions?

You can go to a 33 but have to be careful of lugging the engine too much. It will ruin the bottom end. Can you get a 15 front?

38 to 33 is a big jump. I would also suggest trying a 15 front if it will fit. If nothing else, it is a lot cheaper than a new rear and just a tad higher than the 14/33 combo. If the 15 ends up being to tall of a gear, then you can swap back out for a 14/36 or something. There are formulas and charts available for figuring your overall gearing like here Gear Ratio Chart- Superior Sprockets' instructions for deturmining sprocket tooth count.
