Default Tearing engine apart (Suggestions?)

Hi guys and OPT,

To OPT, I want to thank you so much for everything and i couldn't have done most of my fourwheeler with your brain.

I am going to talk to the guy, but we have shipping issues... I figured that instead of paying 300 to ship there and back, i could tear the engine and anything that's worn out will be replaced at the cost of the guy i bought it from.

Do you have any suggestions? (I have my manual for my year)

This is a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4, By the way.

I'd work on the shipping issues with the guy! If he'd agree to split the charges well worth the money and time of not having to tear this engine back down yourself! Just crate it and ship it if you can. The very most I'd do is to tear the top end off and inspect the piston/cylinder, head, etc. If it's ok on the top end and the problem is in the bottom end,I wouldn't go any further and just ship it.That is if he repairs engines also and not just sells em and does stand behind them..

I talked to him and he said "Do you have oil in the engine?"

I pulled the drain plug out and almost none came out.

What do i do?

Hey OPT,

I primed the oil pump, and the engine is way quieter now, but it's still too loud.

I am starting to believe there's a oil flow issue. The other engine was destroyed because of NO OIL. Now it's sounding like it's running dry. (nothing is broken cause it doesn't sound THAT bad)

I am starting to believe the guy who sold me the engine was right all along. This engine was probably in perfect shape when it arrived, just didn't get enough oil...

Also, i installed a new oil filter.

I looked at my oil dipstick and it is above normal. It's all the way to "Full"

Which is NOT good. :/

But Thank god i didn't run it or ride it.

2 quarts of oil only. After you block off the tank vent with vice grips to help prime the pump, run it for a couple minutes then remove the vice grips. You still have to run it for several more minutes then kill it to get a true reading on the dipstick.

Ok, i ran the fourwheeler for about 2 minutes or less and checked the dipstick...

SMOKE came out of the oil tank, but the oil tank isn't hot at all. It's more cold than hot.

Should i take the engine back out and check the top end? If it's all good on the top end, i'll just assume it's on the bottom end and ship it back.

Just drive it a while to see what all happens to it!!Better than sending part of it back only to have something else go wrong! If it craps out on you send the whole blame engine back to him. I know it's too late on this one,BUT in the future rebuild any engine you have rather than buying a used engine, guaranteed or not, then you will know exactly what you have without all the frustration! This isn't the first time I've seen this happen on people buying used engines..

I definitely learned my lesson... I could've rebuilt my engine for about 800$ if i kept the camshaft and other stuff that were in great shape and had deals on ebay.

The guy has been extremely nice. He doesn't even want to tear it down, he said he will refund me my entire 675$ after i ship the engine out to them.

How much would it cost to rebuild my original entire bottom end? (Piston head needs to be replaced, valves need to be replaced, etc.) The top end looks fine.
