Default 05 Scrambler starts then shuts off

My scrambler all of the sudden will start run for a couple of seconds then shut off. You have to turn either the key off then restart or use the kill switch on the left handlebar to start again. When it dies while running you can actually use the kill switch (cycling off and on) and it will run, almost die, run, almost die. It will idle, but when you give it gas it shuts off. I checked all electrical connections and it runs great when you throttle it for the short time it runs.... Oil is good, antifreeze is good, battery is strong. I'm at a loss. Any Ideas from the forum?

I'd eliminate a fuel problem first. Pull the fuel line from the carb and see if you have a good stream of fuel when you crank the engine over.If not could be as simple as a stopped up fuel filter or a fuel pump problem Also check that the tank vent line is open.Plus the ignition switch itself could be shorting out internally. Switch has also been updated. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

hadn't thought about a clogged fuel filter... Still doesn't explain the ability to use either the run/stop switch or ignition switch to get it to refire right after it dies but the motor is still turning... Still going to pull the hose and check, could be unspent fuel that "Seeps" in while the motor dies. Thanks

Also check under the front panel for any shorts in the wiring from the ignition and left control switch. This is where all the twisting and turning goes on and the worst area for wires shorting out.

Default ECM recall

It was a bad ECM.... There was a recall on 05-06's for catching FIRE! Fortunately it worked to my advantage and I got a new ECM... It fixed the problem. Believe it or not I have tons more power, didn't realize how much I'd lost with the bad ECM..

Also want to thank the guy that PM'd me and let me know about the recall. Nothing like getting your problem solved "For Free!"

I am pissed that neither the Dealer, nor Polaris let me know about the recall. I bought it new in August 05 (Two Months after the recall), why wasn't it changed then? And All my time wasted tearing things apart just to determine that wasn't the problem......

Sorry missed that one entirely, even after all the ecms I changed on that year model. Yea, some people got the recall bulletin some didn't. I called all our customers from a printed out list of the ones we sold that were affected so we could schedule when they could come in so it wouldn't be a stampede. Glad you found the problem and at least it was covered.

The ECM sure was not a brilliant addition in 2004.
Leave it to Polaris to fix it even if its not broke. LOL
