Default No power on 2012 sportsman 500ho

Hi,everyone.im looking for some help with my sportsman.i lost all electrical power to the instruments and everything.the battery is new and fully charged.i have checked and cleaned every connection I can find. I also swapped the key and kill switches with my brothers machine and they are good. We also checked the fuses in the front box and they were all ok but the main fuse was a little melted.1 second the thing started just fine and the next, nothing. It may or may not be related but the last few times I used the machine I had to hook the battery charger up and then the dash would light up and it would start fine, after only charging for a few seconds.almost like the charger pushed something over the edge. Electrical problems are my worst nightmare. Hopefully this is a known problem. Thanks in advance for any help

If the main fuse was a little melted that's why you wouldn't have power.Check the fuse block and the wiring leading to it as you possibly could have some wires touching or loose in the block itself.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Thanks for the response.we took the fuse block off and cleaned everything up.my brother was suspicious of the main fuse wires but we kept getting 12.8v when we tested it.i will double check again. We were unable to find any circuit breakers.

If you still don't have power to the ignition switch or speedo, then it still sounds like you could possibly have a short or grounding problem somewhere. One thing a lot of people overlook is the ground wire from the battery to the frame, etc. You can also ohm out the brown(ground) wires from the ignition switch, left control switch, fuse block grounds to a known good ground such as a bare metal spot on the frame. If one brown wire zeros out, then move to the next one. It's a process of elimination on electrical problems.

hi,thanks again for the replys.ive been out tinkering and havnt found out much.I do have power to the key switch and the speedo. on the key switch, the yellow and the red with black wires have 12.5v...on the speedo i found a troubleshooting schematic that told me to test the #1pin(red wire)and the #2 pin(red with white) against ground. the red wire is 12vconstant and i had voltage there.the red/white wire is 12v switched and i did not have voltage there.according to the schematic, the speedo is ok and it says "repair wiring". i just knew which wiring to repair!!! lol.I will go back out and double check the grounding.

Red/white wires should power up with the ignition switch on.If any doesn't start there. All it takes is just one wire.Worst case scenario on electrical is a $250 harness and in some cases you can find the problem as you strip the old harness down which is a bummer. The average shop would spend a couple hrs on shorts, after that they'd throw in the towel and recommend a new harness. This should give you an incentive on not giving up too early. Keep us updated.

After a lot of searching I found the problem.1 of the pins on the wire plug going into the stop switch wasn't making good contact.i had already removed and cleaned this plug so for a while it was considered good and crossed off the list.i think the only way I found it was because I had the key switch and head lights on and when I wiggled the wires the lights flashed on. I had to "adjust" the pins with a dart and now all is well!! Thanks for the help

Glad you finally found the problem. That's why I had one of these in the tool box. The connectors and pins are easy to over look the first time.
