Usually leaking gas is just a carp float adjustment #37 or the needle assembly needs cleaned or changed #36.
Even if the carb leaks I though the over flow tube just goes to the ground not the air box on all carbs.

Worn/sticking needle and seat as mentioned, but don't overlook any contamination of gas in the oil tank that could possibly thin the oil down and cause engine damage. If gas is getting into the air box,it's probably getting into the oil also.

check your oil for the smell of gas. if there's gas In the oil then change it as mentioned. clean the carb when you have it apart as well.

If really contaminated you can smell the gas on the dip stick. If in doubt 2 quarts of oil and a filter is cheap insurance. Carb kit should solve your problem. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-Sportsman-500-2003-2004-2005-Carb-Carburetor-Kit-/400627265557?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d473ef015&vxp=mtr Plus make sure the float is set correctly after you install the kit.
