need some help bought this atv at a cheap price it had sit for roughly 3 years i got it started after doing the typical with fuel gummed up and a tune up it sounded great but i found out later after it blew up a common problem was cam exhaust lobe was bad so now I've bought all the parts new motor is in the bike i have good spark plenty of fuel and made sure the ETC was open but i still cant get to start! Is there anything i might be over looking or after engine failure do i need to replace the ETC or cdi any help would be fantastic. One other thing i did break the wire for the coolant temp sensor would that be causing my problem thank you

I'd recheck cam timing, plus not uncommon for the 500 to shear flywheel keys. Just remove the flywheel nut and see if this has happened. Even something simple as to large a gap in the pick up (pulse coil) can cause problems such as this guy had. Would start with recoil, but not electric start.http://forums.atvconnection.com/pola...ml#post3155476

Every time I pull my ATV out after it has not ran all winter it will turn over good but not start. I spray ether in the air box and then it runs great for the entire season after that.
Its like it needs that extra help to get things going again after a long storage sit.

When my 2001 500HO sits for a while, it acts the same. A couple of years ago, I found if I put pressurize the gas tank for a couple of seconds before I even try, it starts right away!
I pressurize the tank by cupping my hand around the filler, mouth sealed against my hand, and blow hard!!!
Yes, many have said
- but folks, it works every time!

Probably part of it might be that they lose their "prime" into the fuel pump or that fuel level in the carb bowl can drop or fuel can evaporate over time through the carb vent tube.Always took my old Honda several tries if I let it sit awhile to get enough fuel to crank with it's vacuum operated fuel valve.Waited to long this year, now carbs are on the work bench. Even harder for Polaris as fuel has to go from the tank to the fuel valve, fuel valve to the pump inlet, then pump outlet to the carb assisted by the carb vacuum line to the fuel pump. If the tanks were a little higher or the carbs a little lower, probably could eliminate a fuel pump and make things simpler with just a vacuum petcock.

ran my 01 outta gas, no way it would re-start with starter, grabed rope and first pull. I think the starter turns engine over so much slower than recoil, the pump takes a long time to get fuel through carb
