Ok first things first, the counter balance oil dipstick on the 400 Scrambler is located under the airbox and just to the right of the carb?? (If you were standing behind the quad looking towards the front). Ok I checked this oil the other day and it is grey in color and it is supposed to be 10W-30? That doesnt seem right. So I thought I would change it but I cannot find which bolt it is underneath the quad. Could someone please explain how this is done and where everything is at? I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Take the skid plate off and look WAY under the quad in or close to the middle. It's a small bolt plug. It might have a + screw in the middle of a hex bolt head, but I may be wrong. You'll know when ya get the right one hehe. The first time I did this, I drained the recoil assembly and thought that was it hehe. I checked the oil and it was still full. So, when you drain it, check the oil and make sure there ain't none on the dipstick to make sure you got the right one. It's very agrivating I know, I was cussing Polaris the first time, but ya seem to get used to it. Be glad ya don't have a 500. You almost have to disassemble the WHOLE freekin' quad to change the sparkplug! I'm talkin' front fenders, gas tank, about 16 - 20 bolts, screws, and/or nuts, take the instrument panel, gear shifter boot, and wedge the fenders BARELY over the HB's. Gees! A usual 5min max job took 45min first time!!! Anyway, good luck...

When you remove the skidplate you will find 4 plugs in the bottom of the engine one is the crankcase plug one is the recoil drain the other is the starter drain. the counter balance drain is located beside the crankcase drain these two plugs are located side by side about centered on the bottom of the engine.I believe the crank drain is angled . the balancer plug is beside it it is a small plug might have a phillips screw head on it but I,d use a wrench on it any way if you loosen any of these plugs and there wrong no big deal just put them back in. remove them till you find the oil that looks like whats on the dipstick the gray color is likly a little water contamination wouln,t worry haven,t changed one yet that didn,t show a little water. Need any more help just post . I,ll do my best to confuse you futher. HaHa

You better change the oil the first time you see grey color (water). It cost me about $150 to fix my counterbalance since the water rusted the shaft & took out the seals in there that seperate the coolant from this oil. I had coolant leaking out the overflow holes. Good thing I caught it in time because it could have been BIG bucks if I let it go any longer & had to start replacing stuff which a friend had to do. The vent hose is short & low so it sucks in water. My dealer told me to run it high along the gas tank & since then I never had any problems. The quad overheated & automatically shut it's self off while I was riding on a road going about 40-50mph for a couple of minutes. This had to be related to the rusted shaft which the water pump impeller is on because ever since I got it fixed a year ago I never had ANY overheating problems again. Hope this helps.
