500 man rear axle
#1
I checked my rear axle lube after about 80 miles[bought new in Jan.] and noticed it was low so I drained it to see how much was actually in it and discovered some metal filings on the magnetic drain plug. I know sometimes new equipment has manufacturing or assembly residue in it but was just wondering if anyone else experienced this? I now have about 140 miles on it and am ready to take it to the dealer for my initial checkup, so I would like to know if I should express some serious concern for this issue? I love the torque and the ride, don't love the noisy plastic. Oh by the way, there was about 8oz. of lube in it.

i had a problem with my 500 auto's rear axle. it seemed to be leaking oil from the front seal. the dealer said just keep it full and watch for puddling. he said sometimes the factory will over fill the diff mistakingly. i think the metal filings could be a problem, so i'd let the dealer know. however, let the seasoned guys like boner and cowboy, to name a couple, tell you their diagnosis before you take my thought as gospel.

Well a few shavings is normal in the break in oil, but it realy depends on how much and how large are the fillings that you are finding. If they are big peices then I would be alarmed, but if its just kinda dusty shavings then don't worrie, thats totally normal.
