Rubicon Bags and gear

I went on my first ride today. 20 miles in So. Cal. and I managed to find some mud!! Anyway... I realized when I was far from home that I had nothing with me. I was looking at all of the different storage options.
What is better, hard case or soft case? Does loading down the back cause handleing problems?? I would imagine that as long as the weight is evenly distributed, it shouldn't matter, but what about loaded in the back, and no load in the front??
Also, is there a safe way to carry extra gas?
Thanks again!!

I am not a fan of anything that is NOT 100% watertight. I carry a very nice first aid kit and digital camera. I searhed high and low for things that are truely watertight. The problem is my definition of watertight does not match what the advertisements say. I define watertight to mean if the case is submerged and HELD there nothing will come in......ever. The Cajun Dry store complies with this but there is no latch on it so I dont like how it stays shut. I finally used a Pelican case which is commonly used by SCUBA divers. Not only are they water tight to like 100 feet they are indestructable and have a warrenty to go with that!
As far as the load goes I'm not sure since I dont carry a lot....and I dont carry gas.
