Default 1996 Arctic Cat Bearcat 454 Carb issue

Hello,

I have a 1996 Arctic Cat Bearcat 454 with an annoying problem. I am not mechanically inclined so I will try to explain it the best I can.

There are times when I am driving the quad when I hit the throttle the quad responds very slowly with little acceleration. When this happens I can only get about 20 mph out of it. If I am on a hill it will slow to a crawl. Sometimes if I back off on the throttle and try it again then it runs as normal without the loss of power, etc. I've noticed that after running the quad for awhile this loss of power happens all the time. Most of the time I am running it in the woods on trails so the speed really isn't the issue...it's the loss of torque or horsepower or whatever you want to call it.

Anyway, I had the carb cleaned and the mechanic said that the carb is rusty or corroded around the diaphragm and therefore it may not be getting a good vacuum because of it. That's what he thought was causing the problem.

So, I am looking for some advice. Does this sound reasonable? I have looked at replacing the carb but a new OEM carb is $570 CDN. Would there be other branded carbs that would fit?

Thanks for any help.

I had this happen on my 400. It ended up being the diaphragm was just a little stiff and wasn't being sucked up to wide open. At first I thought it must be a hole but nothing and it really didn't feel that stiff, until I got a new one. Which was really soft compared to the one in it.
