Default 98 Foreman 450 ES shifting problem. can hear the shift motor try to shift but will no

Can hear the shift motor try to shift but will not shift. Some times it will shift well for quite a while. Then it stops can hear the motor try to shift for a few times and then nothing. Turn engine off wait a few minutes and most of time it will shift gears again for a little while. What can I try to correct this problem?

Do some research in this forum as I remember reading about rebuilding that shift motor. I am not a Honda owner but have read a lot about the electronic shift problems Honda has had. There owners appear to have solved some of the issues but you will have to do some searching on here to find it, or hopefully someone can point out the posting.

May try to adjust clutch and then if not better may want replaced angle sensor.

If you have trouble changing with the emergency lever, the problem is likely to be in the gearchange mechanism, under the clutch cover. If you can change OK with the emergency lever, the problem is in the ES part. Cheapest is to check the shift motor for worn brushes, loose magnets and clean all the carbon dust out. This may fix it, however it is a pig of a job to re assemble the 450 motor. More likely to be a faulty angle sensor, this is a lot easier to change, but if it doesn't fix it, you are going to have to check that motor, and you have thrown $80 away on a new sensor.
