Default 2004 Honda rancher es

Looking for some help. The screen has a couple dashes through where it should say 1st gear. The dash es are not blinking though. The atv shifts through all the gears, but when shifting from 1st to 2nd you have to slow down a bit and let off the throttle to get it to shift. Otherwise shifts fine through all the other gears. If anyone has some ideas what to look for I would appreciate it. Thank you

The two dashes indicate that the chosen gear is not fully engaged. This can be because of a faulty gear position indicator, or bent/broken/loose selector mechanism. Having to alter speeds to make the gearchange seems more like a clutch adjustment problem, so check this before going any further.
