Common problem on these old shifters as they wore over the years.Loosen the lock nuts on the ball ends at the shift shafts. Remove the the two 10mm nuts securing the linkage arms to the shift levers and pull them up out of the way. Take the palm of your hand and slap the gear shift straight back to neutral position. While linkage arms are off check for any excessive free play back and forth on the shift lever. If it has a lot you may need to replace worn parts in the shift box. A lot of parts are becoming nla for these old style shifters. Take channel lock and get the gear case belcranks back to neutral. Turn the rod ends to wher the ends drop straight into the the shift levers with no binding or pulling.Replace the two 10mm nuts and tighten the linkage ends lock nuts. This may help shifting for a while but best to replace any worn linkage ball ends and worn parts in the gear shifter. This includes slide o-rings also. After rebuild fill with 0w40 to where oil level is barely covering the top of the shifter slides.

Thanks for the info, did just as you said and it worked. I'm sure I'll be on here more, this Polaris is an old beate, but fun to ride.

If you noticed any excessive slack in the shift lever,I'd replace worn shift box parts while they're still available. The plastic cup can wear along with the springs, linkage ball ends, shift slides and slide o-rings. I consider this a temporary fix as many lock up again later on. Glad it's working ok for the time being.
