xplorer 400 Awd transmission?
#1
i have a 400 Awd... i put the machine in reverse and backed up a few feet and had cocked the handle bars all the way to the right while backing... when i put it back in forward the reverse light stuck on for a sec. then the neutral light stuck on .also it ran like crap from then on and i suspected the rev limiter was stuck on so i hobbled home...while troubleshooting it later i found that the reason it was running so bad was the choke cable had somehow got bound when i was backing up and turning and had stuck in the full choke position...but also i found that i only had Awd in reverse..when i put it in forward hi or lo , the neutral light stays on unless you push it hard forward to get the neutral light to go off...a couple of times the awd light popped on when i was holding it hard forward, but you could push around on it for an hour and never get it to come on most times..so i figured it was the gear selector, after all it has the wiring coming out of it,.so in my infinate wisdom i bought another gear selector off ebay,,brand new supposedly but as is, and it looked new when it arrived,. their was a difference in the model numbers from mine and also one of the mounting holes were in a different location but the wiring and everything else was a match and they looked identical in every other way so i drilled and tapped a new hole in the right spot and mounted it up...heres what i have now.. reverse works perfect in 2 and Awd drive reverse light works right. if i put it in hi or lo forward the neutral light stays on unless i push forward hard and hold.the awd light came on one time while i was pushing forward, but hasn't again.it runs great in 2wd even if the neutral light is on..makes me wonder if both the shifters i have are bad or there is something else i'm not seeing?is their anything at the transmission end of the shifter linkage that may not be adjusted right?i really miss awd and dread winter coming without it..all comments welcome.. thanks

No not the hubs.Take the screws out of the top of the shifter and take the top and shifter lever off.The housing should be at least half full of oil(10w40)

o.k. i looked at the old one this morn,it had oil in it,but not half full, maybe a inch in the bottom.i hav'nt taken the new shifter apart,do you think the oil could affect the awd in forward? thanks.. by the way i live down by golconda...not to far from you

o.k. brad, one more question on the shifter.i wonder if the one i got off ebay may have never had any oil in it,being it was an off the shelf part not a junkyard part?......also, i have access to miles and miles of awesome trails literally 1 minute from my house...me and my son spend alot of time on them.he is five years old and rides in front of me as my navigator..
