Affect of different oil/gas ratios-->
#1
Just curious to know what I could see "performance wise" between running a 32:1 oil/gas ratio and lets say 40:1 with the same type of oil?? I am running 32:1 now with no apparent problems. Can more oil foul more plugs? Does more oil kill performance?
Thanks
Thanks

from my experience (with a gas leaf blower) more oil does kill performance, not to forgtet it leaves gunky buildup in the exaust system. to little oil and well, you know what happens.
keep in mind that a atv with 10x the discplacement may act diferently.

Xplor,
it's been a while since I've owned a 2-stroke machine but I do know that if you mix too rich, you can and will foul more plugs. Mix too lean, and you lack the lubrication necessary for your machine to run properly and could "fuse" your piston in the cylinder.
One other thing to remember is to run with the recommended spark plug as well. You can also do damage by running either too hot of a plug or too cold of a plug. Too cold, you won't get the needed spark to completely burn the fuel and fouling will result. Check your plugs periodically and see what color the tip is. The tips should be a "light" cocoa brown if your machine is jetted correctly and running with the proper fuel/oil mixture. If your plug is wet or black, your too rich. If it's light gray or white, your too lean.
Hope this helps.

The oil will decrease the amount of power potential of fuel. The more oil, the less performance. The trick is to not get the oil so thin that you lose lubrication.
There are ways of compensating for this, by jetting a little richer, fiddling with compression ratio, etc. About the best advice I can give is go with what the mfg. recommends, as they probably spent more R&D figuring out what works best overall. More power is possible by just leaning out the oil, but you will be sacrificing lubrication. Too much oil will foul plugs, and, ironically enough, cause carbon build-up which can also reduce engine life.
