Scrambler Gas Leak
#1
I was dissapointed yesterday when I was out riding. The gas vent tube that comes up through the handlebars and the dash keeps squirting gas out of it. I don't know why. Also, whenever I put a full tank of gas in it, it seems to squirt out after I let it run for about five minutes. Can anyone help?

There is no fuel pump as it is gravity fed.
The problem usually happens when you have filled the tank to the max, and the breather hose outlet is lower then the top of the fuel tank, thereby syphoning the gas out. Rerout the breather hose so the end sticks up by the handlebar stem.

I"M pretty sure if it spews some gas thats allright!my 2001 does the same thing .i think its from riding, the gas splashes into the vent line and the pressure that the tank builds up just pushes it out.....how much is yours leaking?

I have the exact same problem. I've had this bike for five years and just last weekend it started leaking gas out the vent hose. But it is not just gas splashing around it is actually being forced out enough that it gets all over me while riding. Even with the tank half-full it still happens. If I figure it out I'll post it.

It's leaking pretty bad. I pulled it out of the little hole to see how much is coming out, and it squirted all over me when I was riding. It drips down the gas tank underneath, and onto the engine and componponents below. I had 4 or 5 people tell me " holy sh*t your gas tank is leaking!" I said, "aww no its just this f*cked up vent dripping down." Before I know it, my quad will catch on fire!LOL My garage smells like gas now too(like really bad). I wouldn't be writing this if it wasn't so bad. There is no cracks or leaks in my tank, I'm sure of that. I'm p*ssed. Any help is appreciated.THANKS!

Interesting, but I think ScrambledKiwi is on the right track.
After I installed the HPD steering bushing in my Sportsman, I started having a similar problem. Just about anytime I went up a steep hill (which is about 50% of the time - then I'm going down steep hills) gas would run out from under the headlight pod and down the sides of the tank. I figured that for some reason, the bottom of the steering post was plugged and the fuel from the vent hose could not drain out. A few months later, I replaced the steering post, and found that indeed bottom of the old one was plugged up with grease; so it was fillilng up, then pouring out on the steep hills. Looking at the way the grease is supposed to go in there, it should never be able to plug up the steering post though. BUT... thinking about ScrambledKiwi's response, if the hose is hanging way down in the tube it *could* siphon fuel until it is below the vent opening in the tank (wherever that is; and I'm not looking at it tonight). Next time I have my headlight pod apart, I'm re-positioning that tube. Who knows, maybe my gas mileage (which isn't bad anyhow) will improve if I quit dumping it out on the ground.
Come to think about it, I might have that thing apart real soon... I'm leaving for Moab in the morning, and I *will* be doing some steep climbing.
See ya there Cob!
