Default 400L won't idle down

Hey guys. Brand New to the forum. Before I get started I was super sad to hear about old Polaris tech. I'd read through tons of his stuff on here when I wasnt a member.

Ok. So here's my issue. I have a 96 Xplorer that will not idle down. I've resealed the thing top to bottom, slobbered some 515 on the cylinder to case gasket, redone both crank seals, adjusted the choke, new reed seal. I've rejetted the pilot jet from a 35 up to a 50. I have sprayed everything a guy can see with brakekleen and no change. The rpms hang up after I let off the throttle. The throttle adjuster is all the way down. The pilot screw is all the way in, the float bowl is full, and still it grinds like a mother if you try to shift it into gear. If I turn the choke to half engaged, it will slow down enough to get it in gear, but put it back to normal and she revs up again...I'm at a loss.
Any ideas?
