Which has more HP Grizzly or Sportsman?

Who cares! Even if you found out the number it would be taken at the crankshaft (which means nothing) sometimes they cheat and measure it on the power stroke. What counts is how much horsepower is at the wheels, and the only way to find out that is with a dynometer.

Posted HP ratings on specs sheets can be anything you want them to be. In the real world, at the rear wheels, the Grizz does make 3-4 more hp on a rear wheel dyno. The Grizz has a much better power curve, particularly in the higher rpm range, it's very, very noticeable. Unlike the SP500 which falls off the planet at higher rpms. Our 300 4x4 can keep up with the Sportsman on top end with no problem at all. They are about equal above 35 mph. The power comes on just a bit sooner with the SP500 than the Grizz. The clutching on the Grizz needs lots of help as does the steering.
I've drag raced two different Grizzlies. My SP500 gets out much quicker and can beat the Grizz in 100 yds. thanks to my roller clutch. Otherwise it would be real tight race. When comparing stock machines, the Grizz "usually" will beat a SP500 on the top end on a long run.

Jack,Im amazed that a 300 4x4 honda stays with the 500 Sportsman at top end.My only advice is to have the Sportsman looked at.Something is not right.I have drag raced 98 Grizz's as well, never lost to one yet. Im pushing 26inch Good Year Mud Runners to,and the extra weight of my my plow mounts as well.I do have a clutch kit though,so my take-off is probably much better.I beat my buddies 99 450s Honda very bad in a drag race to.Thats why it's hard to imagine a 300 toping out with the Sportsman.

I,ve got a feeling Jack has a Polaris 300 , don,t know for sure but a 300 Honda 4x4 would likly have to be really hopped up. I had a 300 4x4 Polaris and it would run on top with the 500.

I didn't say a Honda. Someone ***-u-me-d it was but no it's a Polaris 300 4x4. Some have no clue about performance or what even runs well, and it's very apparent. But in the real world a Grizz will beat a SP500 every time if both are stock. I think there is smoke being blown here that is not from a 4-stroke or leaky rings. I have altered that pattern with my SP500 by adding the roller clutch, Supertrapp, K&N & DynoJet which does surprise the Grizz guys, but the top end still sucks.
This original post was about how much hp the SP500 vs the Grizz made. At the rear wheels its about 18-19 for the SP500 and 22-23 for the Grizz in stock form. I think virtually "any" atv of any kind could could match the top end of the SP500 with very little problem, and yes, even a "Honda 300 4x4". The SP 500 is a real dog on the top side as were the original Scrambler 500's with this same motor. It's good to do a reality check once in a while and check the rear wheel hp of your quad to it's actual weight. Then come down to earth. That tells the real story, no hype, no bs.
In fact, I remember the days of the Sportsman 400 which would absolutely run circles around the SP500 on low-mid-high-end, apparently we have forgotten how badly the SP500 performs compared to those "original Sportsman" quads. By the way . . . our 300 4x4 was originally build to "beat" Wolverines. It's had a little engine work done it it and actually can kick the SP500 butt right from the get-go, I don't think any SP500 want to test their acceleration against this nice little 4x4. I know, I've tried.
I didn't buy my SP500 for performance, or I would have bought something else. It's IRS is wonderful and the tremendous weight can actually help those MR's dig better. Most hp or fastest of the4x4's in stock form, no, but they can be built to perform quite well if you want to.
