Hello. Any help is appreciated. I picked up a 1984 LT 185 that has the optional electric starter on it. They were having starter issues and that's how I bought it. I have two problems now. I tossed the ignition switch figuring I'd simply get a new one and I'm sure I can but not sure what to get. I see some with M for magneto connection and many with just Battery, Ignition, ACC, and Starter. I'm not sure what I need to use.

I also cannot find a wiring diagram for the bike with an electric starter attached. It can't be too complex but I want to get it right.

Any suggestions?

Unfortunately the wiring schematics don't include an electric starter. I have a service manual but no luck. HOWEVER, I did find the ignition switch after purchasing several that were not "wired" correctly (internal connections). It turns out the Briggs and Stratton Ignition switches have the same Starter, Magneto, Battery, Ground (to switch case) and Light and look just like the original. Take a look at part B&S 430-173. The bike uses all connections except the Light.

I was ready to buy handlebar switches when I actually found my original switch that I swore I tossed with other parts I was replacing. It had fallen into the gravel and was buried. The process did force me to study the bikes wiring and the function of the Magneto, its components, CDI, Regulator and associated connections. I was ready to rewire if necessary. Construction electricians that I talked with say they stay away from motorcycle wiring because manufacturers use creative ways to complete circuits and it can be hard to follow. I did have to take the wiring diagram and follow it while chasing down wires on the bike What a pain.

I also learned that back in the day starter kits for many ATVs were manufactured in California by the GOKI Mfg company. Since out of business but the parts were acquired by OddATV out of NY and their phone # is 631-737-3340.

I am happy I found my switch but it drove me to find what I needed to replace it, just in case. Now I know and so do you.
