Chinese 110 transmission
#1
Firstly, thanks for all the knowledge I've gained from reading the posts here since we bought our son a chinese dirt bike a couple years ago. I haven't been able to find anyone close by who's willing to work on it, so I've had to teach myself. Prior to that I couldn't have pointed out a carburetor if my life depended on it. His dirt bike isn't my current problem. My sister and her husband scrounged up a used chinese 110 atv for their youngster, and I actually managed to get it running. The only markings on it that are still legible is that it was manufactured in 2009. The engine is fine. It will easily shift into Reverse, and forward 1st gear, but not beyond that. As said, I'm much more comfortable with engines than I used to be, but not so much with the transmission. Without completely cracking the case open, is there any way to tell if this atv is, hopefully, a 1-1 transmission (1 gear Reverse, one gear forward)?

I would guess that it is. Trouble is, the Honda Cub engines come with all sorts of gearboxes, single speed, forward reverse only, 3 forward and reverse, 3 or 4 forward. I think there are some autos too. If it has a different engine, 2 stroke or GY6 it will be belt drive auto, and some have a forward reverse gearbox as well, usually built into the rear axle.

Thanks for the input. If this thing belonged to me, I would have opened it up already, for the learning opportunity alone. If there actually is a second and third gear, my fear is that this kid will get excited about his first 4 wheeler, want to go fast, rev it too much (because he can't get into second gear), and lock the piston up. The gasket set I ordered should arrive in a couple days, so I may at least take the clutch cover off and take a peek. Thanks again
