Default 86 yfm225 start button not working

Hello, I recently got my four wheeler running and I’m having to jumpstart it with the solenoid and my start button won’t work nor will my lights when I turn the key the four wheeler has to be running in order for the lights to work but I’m not sure how to fix this I’ve researched a lot and nothing. Also I replaced the switch and still nothing

Did you check the run relay?

Do you mean the starter relay? If so it’s good but however the starter does make a whirring sound I need to replace the starter but I don’t think that would affect anything I’m figuring something electrical but also when you turn the key the nuetral and headlights only come on when the engine is running so is it like connected to the coil or something?

So on these bikes when you turn the key to run you activate a relay. This relay provides all power when the bike is in run. There is a secondary kill switch on the left handlebar right above the the start button. But what your describing sounds like your shorting the high amperage parts of the solenoid to get your starter working. Try testing your solenoid.

Sorry for the late response but I have replaced the solenoid it’s still not working I’m thinking there is an issue with the wiring I seen someone say maybe the coil needs to be replaced but I have no clue bc I’ve researched and nothing pops up so idk what the issue is.

Since youve replaced the solenoid, now check the relay. The relay protects the switches and provides the running power for the cdi.

Ok so I checked the relay and I couldn’t really get it to test it kept falling so I just threw it on and I’ll just pay 8$ for a new one might as well and then I was riding and just to mess around I hit the button while the four wheeler was on and it worked but stopped working when I shut the four wheeler off so I’m sure it’s the relay but if nothing works my friend will bypass it ig but thank you for your help I was confused on this so your comments were helpful

Glad I could help. It sounds like the relay is corroded especially with the starter working while running, btw dont do that frequently. Im glad you found your culprit and it didnt require major surgery.
