1994 300 2x4 2 stroke ran without oil
#1
Hello,
I took my 94 300 out on a run for the first time last week. I have been using this rig for lots of slow short trips for several months and this was the first time I ever really got up to a decent speed with it. Anyway, I had ridden about a quarter mile up a gradual hill when the engine started getting hot and making a weird knocking noise. It didn't want to idle and just seemed like something was wrong. So i let it cool for a few minutes and gradually limped it back down the hill to the truck where my tools are. I found that the nipple where the oil line connects to the carb and somehow fallen out of the carb. I got it back in the hole and restarted the engine, now it was idling but still didn't sound happy- still had that knock noise albeit quite a bit less. After the 20 mile trip back home, i started it up and the engine sounded fine- had plenty of power and started on the first stroke like normal. My question is, if this happened to you, what would you do from here besides fix the oil line? What would be a good way to know that the engine is okay to go on long trips?

chances are you did internal damage running it with no oil (hence the knocking). really no way without
taking it apart to see how much if any damage was done. a lot of people will pre mix their oil with the gas and bypass the oil pump.

Usually they nip up on the piston and that scores piston and bore, dropping compression, making them harder to start and lowers power. If it starts OK and hasn't lost power, you have probably got away with it. If there is any damage, the piston knocks a bit at idle when the engine is cold, but you may not be able to hear it on a two stroke. I am not a fan of converting to premix, knowing just how much to put in, and remembering to do it, if you have other engines that don't take a mixture, is harder than just checking there is enough in the oil tank at every fuel fill up.
