I have a ’99 Sportsman 500 with 400, dirt road, no mud, miles on it. Recently I noticed it started making a dull metallic tapping noise in the front end. It seems to be isolated to the left side (when sitting on the ATV) and it only happens while rolling. The noise is constant but random meaning there is no rhythm to it but it is always tapping while rolling in two wheel drive. I haven’t tested it in 4WD. I have greased all of the normal grease fittings up front to no avail. Any ideas as to what might be the cause and how I might fix it?

Thanks!

Scott

PS In truth it sounds like a binding and releasing noise intermittent with a tapping sound but I didn't know if that would be descriptive enough for people to understand.

My best guess is your brake pads catches a high spot on the disc as it rotates. If its still in warranty have your dealer glue the pads to piston and caliper. If not go to the parts store and buy some and follow the directions. Jack up the front end and rotate the wheel while watching the pads to confirm thats the problem.
