i've been reading your posts and i'm getting a polaris..... now, i want something thats fun to ride on the trails in the woods, but i also want to go camping, so racks are needed, but i want to go fast and have fun, but 4x4 would be better in the winter, and i want to go fast and have fun.
so, i'm concidering.....1. 2000 explorer 400, has racks, more practical, but will i go fast and have fun? here they're $5449. 2. 2000 scrambler 4x4, more sporty, no racks, i here they're fast, here $5150. 3. 1999 sport 400, not 4x4, but i'm told they're fast and fun, but what about the snow? the price (only one left new) $4239.
tell me whats up with my choices, pros / cons, thanks for the help.

You really have to know what what you primary riding will be. I have a sportsman 400 4x4 that I got thinking that I would be doing yard work camping and hunting. I ended up racing around my friends motorcross track and haveing a blast. To keep up with the motorcycles I put a pipe on it. That made a big difference but 600 lbs is 600 lbs!! If I were to do it all over again I would have gotten a 400 scrambler 4x4 and gotten the rear rack accesory. I still love my sportsman. It is one fast tank.

I agree with QUAD_MAN. The Xplorer 400L seems to be the right bike for you. My 96 has never let me down, the lo range is great and it is the quickest one of my group.
Take off the racks and she looks quite sporty, especially if you look at moving the lower headlights to where the front rack bolts on. (I have not done this yet, but it look possible)

If it were me I would go with the Sport. Unless you plan on doing some serious towing you won't need the low range of the Explorer. I find with a good set of tires and the right attack I can go most places the 4x4's go. I have a Scrambler and if I were to do it again I would go with the Sport (Scrambler 2x4 for 2000). You can put a rear rack on it from Polaris for $99 (my dealer let me have it for $89). They also have a front rack if you feel the need. For $400 you can put a pipe on it and really haul BUTT. You would still have money left over compared to the other two.

Just to let you know which way to go.
I have both. I have a 99 Explorer 400 4X4 and I a have a 97 Scrambler 500 4x4. I think that the ride is smoother on the explorer 400(which is better if you must carry a passenger) the down side to the 400 explorer is trying to ride aggressively-it is hard to slide around corners and is not made for jumping. as far as all out speed, my 400( which is my wife's and this really ticks me off) is faster. It beats the 500 off the line and tops out about a mile an hour faster. Not a big difference, but still ticks me off. To my defense, the 500 has large mud tires on it which I am sure has slowed it down a little. I enjoy riding the 500 when I am going to cut loose and enjoy the 400 when I am cruising.
Hope this helps.

as a sidenote to toys response- the new scrambler 500's will be faster than the xplorer 400. the 97 scrambler he refers to did not have high output engine as the 98-2000 models do. I would highly recommend the Scramlber 500 4x4 as it offers the best of both worlds and you can put a rack on it if you wish. Good luck!!

I vote for the Xploper 400. The 99's and up have a shaft drive front and concentric chain in the back witch I think is a great set up.
They also have racks,high/low range,4 wheel drive and high/low head lights.
I have one and have beat the crap out of it and it hasent failed me once.
My local dealer has 99 400 Xplorer's for $4999. He is a small dealer and if he can sell for that price i think anyone could.
