Hi all,

I often read about people who ask if they can get their gold rims to silver. Well, not only can it be done, but it's almost fast and easy. Note the almost.
Before, watch the result here, yeap, that rim was gold before :

How did I do it?

Tons of concentrated Clean Off oven cleaner (the one that acts in 10-15 minutes, NOT overnight). I covered the rim and let act for 2-3 hours. Most anodize went off with this.

Sand paper (160 and 400) to do the finishing job (there were some gold spots) and smoothing evrything. At that point the rim was silver, bare aluminium.

A buffer. (there's one where I work this summer). Ths is the dream machine. I spent 1 hour (maybe less) to get this result. It just spins and does the job for you (well...you still have to hold the rim tightly...at the end, you're really hot and tired). Anyway after some working hours, here's the result.

What not to do!
For the other rim, I used a sandblaster instead of Cleanoff to get rid of the anodize. But the buffer does not smooth things. It's very soft and absolutely not abrasive. So, after sandblasting, I now need to sandpaper everything before buffing. The gold removing is faster, but the sand paper section is longer (I'm not finished yet).

Anyways, if you're tired of the gold rims...you know what you can do!!

Zoro,

For quite a lengthy discussion on this, you can find even more info on this procedure in a discussion that was posted last year in this forum. http://forums.atvconnection.com/thre...B=1&TID=102203

Stupid Question. Do you have to bake the rims in the oven? I used the Oven Cleaner method, but with stuff that works in cold ovens and the anodize did not budge..

Roostking,
I can tell you the spray can Over Cleaner did not do a thing. But the liquid spray did work nice. I guess it'a a matter of how concentrated it is...the liquid is to be left for 10-15 minutes whereas the can one shold do its job overnight (to clean a hoven, that is). Look for the one with the shortest "action time".
