I have been riding my mountain bike on some private property owned by my employer. Someone has built some awesome trails for ATV's and I am amazed at the hills that these things can climb. I can't even walk up this thing and I sure as hell can't pedal up them. I always expect to see the crumpled remains of an ATV at the bottom.
Just curious.

I always hit 'em in second pinned, and I work the clutch to keep the traction going.

I mainly ride my Kodiak and since it's an automatic all I do is punch the gas and lean forward depending on the steepness of the hill. You can go up some serious inclines if you're daring enough. It's a real rush!!! and going down a hill going almost straight down or even straight down is a whole other rush. WOO HOO!!!! Get in some ride time before you try any hills that are seriously steep! If your front end pops up on you, you are going to enter a world of hurt. Never ride beyond your limts!!!

Its all about momentum, power, and a little skill. I usually try to get as much speed as possible and still be under control before starting up a long, steep hill. Then just haul up the hill. Sometimes I find myself actually standing up leaning forward on steep hills.

I always stand up on mine. Remember, you can always buy plastic, but you can't buy vertebrae.

Just like how everyone else said. Also, if you need to you can down-shift to get more low-end to climb, but, in certain cases, you can lose all your power and momentum. This sucks especially if you have to roll down a 100 foot hill backwards!!!!. I did this on my Mojave and I had the fron brakes on the entire time going down and I was still going around 10-20 MPH backwards down a hill, scary, but a real rush.
