Altitude adjustment - SP 500 H.O. and TB 250
#1
Hi all,
Well I did it, I bought the 500HO and love it... Question for all.
A friend and I will be going from Missouri to Colorado this summer to ride west of Colorado Springs, altitude is about 7,000 to 10,000 feet. The atv is currently set for Missouri altitude at 700 feet above sea level. What adjustments should I make to the carb, jetting etc. or do I have to have a dealer do this. My friend sent an email to Polaris and they were no help...."see a dealer", was the response.
Any experiences you could share would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

Hey,
Well, I'm also from Missouri and have a SP500 and TB 250. You're not really me posting while I am sleep walking are you!? Naw... can't be...
Anyway I have a 2000 SP500 -- no a HO.
I asked this same question a few months back as we also plan to go to Colorado this summer. A fellow flatlander from Oklahoma told me he takes his SP500 on the Colorado trails all the time and makes no adjustments. However, with the 250 being a 2-stroke, I am positive you will need to rejet the carb.
If anyone has any additions or changes to this information, please let both of us know...
Thanks in advance!

Your best bet would be to call a dealer out in Colorado and find out what jets they would reccomend for the two machines. As the air is thinner at 7000 feet as opposed to 700 feet, you will neeed to go at least one size leaner on your mains, pilots and you'll have to drop the needle a notch or two.

I hunt in Colorado between 7800-11000' and i have not touchd the jets or any thing else on the sp 500ho. The machine pulled and never missed a beat all of the time we were back there. I also had a passenger on the back all of the time and he was 6'7" and 300 lbs. My Polaris performed flawlessly. Went where the Honda with one person riding could not go, pushed 12-14" of snow amd kept on going.
Change your jets--NO.

My 99 SP500 owners manual has a chart for jetting. I rode on the continental divide between 9400' and 13800' last year and will be going in Aug. this year. The owners manual said to use a 142.5 and it worked perfect. The H.O. is probably different. Stock jet on mine is 155. I'd replace the bowl screws with allen head (4mm) if you rejet. Check your owners manual for proper jet size.
