How to fix a cracked tranny?
#1
My buddy was jumping his Scrambler 500 and cracked the tranny case near the sprocket. How do we fix this and how much could it set him back? Can it be welded?
Does anyone use a HPD chain tensioner for the concentric drive models?

Xplor,
Please tell me that your recent string of ATV bad luck is not contagious. Please!
Wow, it seems that you have recently witnessed every possible Polaris break down. I sincerely hope that your luck improves.
The cracked cases are a known problem and may possibly be fixed under the Polaris "goodwill" policies. Can't help you on the welding suggestions.
It seems that Scramblers are allergic to "big air."

B,
He can either buy a new case half for $200 american dollars or if it's not too bad, you can pull the case and weld a plate behind it. I dont know of the specifics to welding the plate in, but I've heard of it being done. The plate would also probably be cheaper and a "stronger" fix to the origional case.
Yes! HPD is now producing a chain tensioner for concentric models for this exact reason.
Any final decisions on your 400 yet?
Drop me a line.

Yes guys, it's a bad period for Scramblers in our group. We are three and out of those three...three are broken! My buddy's 500 was jumped maybe 3 to 4 feet high tops, and about 15 feet in length. He did say something about hitting a rock and hearing a "clunk" also. The other guy just bought a 400 and blew out the front differential. (if thats what it's called) His CV boot was ripped (or even gone) and he kept riding until his bearings blew or something. He doesn't seem to keen on maintenance and trouble prevention. Mine is still undergoing surgery to find the defective part/component in this whole lean midrange saga of mine.
Who wants to buy a "Super-Scrambler" 400 4x4?? Let me know and it's yours! Serious...very serious!

Patches don't work well. A new case is in order. Or, better yet, a new bike that can jump. Remember the old adage about "white men can't jump", well it is certainly true if you continue to do so on a Polaris, on a regular basis. It's actually called "abuse" when you ride a Polaris. There are fixes, but most won't listen or ride with such abandon that they would ruin anything on wheels. These are "not" pro racing bikes and should not be treated like the same.
If you are going to abuse, you must build it first.
