Hi,
just picked up my 650 yesterday after first service.I guess i should have checked it over better before taking it for a ride. After about a six mile woods and river ride i stopped in the woods to check things over.Well i noticed a steady drip of something dripping from what looked like the valve cover area.I also looked at a few other things and noticed that the o-ring around the air filter was half off and let a little dust in.
This morning i pulled the inner fender and valve cover and to no surprise there was about 1 inch of o-ring left in the groove. Now i am guessing the rest is in the engine.I am pretty p.o. about the whole thing and can do all the work myself and hate to rely on idiots. What should i do about this because i really dont want them to touch it.

Personally,
I would call Kawasaki first and see what they advise you to do. If you have an answering machine with a record function, use it during the call. Maybe someone who knows could respond as to whether the o ring material could have caused any damage to the engine. The dust could have definitely caused damage to the engine. I would eventually pursue having the so-called tech fired. This type of carelessness is unfortunately common. I would not take it back there as you mentioned. I can understand how mad you would be after an experience like that. You spend $7500 and expect them to care for it as well as you would. Good Luck and keep us posted on what you find to be the best way to handle this situation.

My guess is you had better get the extened warranty if you do not already have it or make them stand behind they're stupidity.I have watched many of these mechanics or at least the one in my local dealership and believe me nobody takes care of your machine better than you do real sloppply workmanship they could care less about dirt falling into your engine. I had my 650 in yesterday for a replacement of a choke cable the mechanic had it all tore apart there was the carbs out there still on the engine with nothing over them to keep dirt from entring them. He was pounding on the choke assy to get a screw loose that was real tight with a chisel laying it against the kill switch assy that is also the light switch to hammer to get it loose . What do you think I 'll have trouble with next time. but I have the warrantyfor 3-1/2 years.

I always do the work myself. I don't trust any dealers, nor their mechanics. But I'm planning on taking it in for the first service, but I'm pretty scared. I'll probably take it in, then recheck everything when I get it back.
ron11199, if I was you, I would definately call kawasaki before you do anything. If that doesn't help you, then I would go back to the dealer with the atv and show them the problem where they messed up. I would demand that they give you the extended warranty at a very low cost.

92LT,
Are you taking it to the dealer for the first service because if you don't it will void the warranty/ That's what the sales manager told me when I picked it up the other day. Is that really true?
Thanks.

jefffoxsr, I'll probably end up taking it over to the dealer for the first service only because I heard the same thing about voiding the warranty. I don't want to lose the extended warranty that I bought. But I will definately check it over when I get it back to make sure they change all the fluids and to make sure the valves are correctly adjusted. That reminds me, I should buy a service manual. Did anyone buy one yet?

I called Kawasaki today and they made a note of it and took down my ser# (oh wow !). They told me to take it back to dealer and let them fix it.He said most likely the o-ring pieces fell down to the screen in the bottom of motor. I asked what about it affecting the engine in long term and he said that after mech. at dealership fixes it have him make a note of it(oh wow!).The tech. at Kaw. could not give me any kind of answers without seeing it.He did say that it should not hurt it if it is all removed.
I called dealership today and found out that it was not the head guy that serviced it,instead someone else? The guy i talked to today seemed to know what he was talking about.I will check when i take it back to see if the person that serviced it is even trained.I will also meet with the guy who will be working on it this time and set him straight before he gets to even touch it.I dont know what to ask for in return for all my troubles.
Also is it common practice to change spark plugs at first service? If so they should give you the old ones for spares.

I've had this same kind of pi$$ poor service... I took my truck to a Major Tire retailer ( Sounds like "deers" ) after I ran over a board with about 3 large nails in it at work. I heard the nails pop the tire, and since I had road hazard coverage on the tires, I took it back to where I bought them. I told BOTH the service rep and the tire tech that there were MULTIPLE HOLES IN THE TIRE.
I dropped the truck off before lunch, and came back about 2:00 PM, the truck is sitting in the lot with a FLAT TIRE... I discussed this with the service rep and she assured me that they would fix it. Again, I told her that there was more than one hole in the tire. At 3:30 PM I was back, and you guessed it - the tire was flat. At 5:00 PM I came back for a third time and the tire was pancaked... All I could do is point to the parking lot and ask her what the problem was. Needless to say I went out and discussed this with the tire tech. I took the tire away from him and put in the water tank BELIEVE IT NOT, THERE WAS MORE THAN ONE HOLE. The tire tech had replaced the same patch three times.
