building a jump on a hill and tabletop HELP!
#1
I've noticed that I have 1 or 2 spots where I may be able to create a few additional atv jumps. Because there's little room and my single jump just can't continuosly be fun I've wondered to build 1 or 2 more jumps for the rest of the summer. So I have 2 questions:
1. I want to make a jump so I can land on the hill (downsloping, duh). Now I wonder if this could be done safely. I know this so far: Don't go towards a jump downhill...but that's about it. I'm pretty sure that I should find a flat spot to get the run on and get the revs. Then I'll make a jump that typically would be smaller in height than a table top...Now I would get a good deal of air because let's say I would get 4 feet of air add the drop off from the hill and we may be talking a good deal more. Now the landing would automatically be downsloping because I'm landing on a hill. Is this advisable? How steep should / can this hill be? Can you agree that I definitely can not be entering the jump downhill?
2. I've never built a table top on my own. How do I go about doing this?? How much minimum air should I get before deciding to build the table top instead of a regular jump without a landing (NOTE I HAVE A 300ex with stock shocks and a-arms)? What should the table top look like and how long would an average/small table top usually be?
I would be making these jumps with a tractor not by hand and digging up grass for the dirt I need.

First of all, I wouldnt advise jumping downhill, its ALOT easier if you are jumping up hill, a down hill landing is sweet though.. I built a 20-30ft tabletop down at the local sand pit, it was kind of pre-built, I just had to smooth it off, fill in the landing and make a nice lip for the runway.. I just started off hitting it in 2nd, packing it down and getting use to the feeling, eventually I'd hit it in 3rd, then 4th, then 5th (havent got the cherries to hit it in 6th yet) suprisingly enough 5th was by far the easiest to hit it, got just enough air to land perfectly on the downhill vert, a very nice feeling, very smooth. Unfortunatley I did not have the option of a tractor, that would have made things alot easier.. If I were you I'd start by putting 2 somewhat large mounds of sand together and flattening out the top, pack it down nice, and just keep riding over it until you are launching it. Dont worry about your ability yet, just build the jump and practice until you feel comfortable, the air will follow. I took a couple pics of it, they are in my photos if you'd like to check it out..
On another note, make sure you build it somewhere were nobody is going to mess with it, I built mine at the local sand pit and last week somebody decided to take a tractor to it, whole back half is gone Instead of building it back up I'm searching for another place to build a nice one where no body will mess with it. I just found an old dirt road that goes up a mountain with massive water-bars (5-10'ers) dug in it, I've been hitting them and am in love, waterbars rule.. 6th gear WOT without fear, soaring... You've gotta try.
