The carbon fiber clutch Barnett sent me is installed now. I will test it on Sunday. It has 8 carbon fiber friction plates, 1 kevlar friction plate, 9 steel plates, for a stack height of 40mm. They don't have springs yet, so I use Team-PAMI HD springs. There was an issue with the outer kevlar friction plate, but I will have Barnett switch to the correct plate for their production kits. Chris Taylor is who you should talk to at Barnett. Unfortunately he may be out of the office for 2 weeks. www.barnettclutches.com

I've talked to a couple of engine builders and they cautioned me about putting carbon fiber clutches in a 4-stroke you are taking a hard sharp fiber when it brakes down and sending through your engine. This is not a good thing. They reccomend stock style with HD springs. I saw what a set of Carbon fiber clutches do to a basket when they start slipping Not a pretty site. they work in a two stroke because they are not in the engine oil. The only atv with a seperate tranny oil system is a Cannondale.

There was one minor issue with the outer friction plate. I had to file 0.5mm off each end of the tabs for the plate to fit into the clutch basket. Barnett doesn't have the correct size outer friction plate. So, for now I would look elsewhere for your immediate clutch needs.

So far the clutch is working good. I wasn't able to fully test it yet.

The carbon fiber plates are NOT in contact with the hub or basket by the way.

Oops carbon fiber in not the problem its kevlar. The stuff flat out destroys oil and is hard enough to go through a oil filter. Doesn't matter that it is not touching the basket it still sheds every time you use it. A friend toasted his stock clutch then put in a kevlar then toasted it. It destroyed everything in the clutch with the kevlar clutch. I called a couple of nationally known engine builders and they said no to kevlar in 4 strokes. Just passing on their wisdom and experiance.

AIR,

I too, have just been told about this not too long ago. I installed a Hinson basket directly from Hinson and asked what they recommended for clutch plates. He replied by saying, only to use stock plates and to stay away from "kevlar and carbon fiber" both will leave abrasive particals in the oil. He went on to say that the abrasives form both material is like puting sand in the motor, as it will destroy any aluminum parts very quickly.

Needless to say I went with the stock plates. If I find they start to slip, I will just start using heavier springs w/ the stock plates.
