NEW 250R seat doesnt sit right..

I bought my 88 R in may and it didnt come with a seat. So i bought a new seat nd all the mouning hardware. I can't get the seat to sit smoothly against the gas tank. The top of the seat (narroest part) stays about a inch above the tank.
What gives?
