How can you tell if you need a top end rebuild on your scrambler. I am not a mecanic wiz, so what is exactly done when you do it. Also, what will it do to the quad performance wise?

When you notice some loss of performance you can check things out. Is your silencer clean, good plug, good air filter, good fuel filter, jetted correctly, all the outside of the engine maintenace stuff. If all this is good but the bike isnt running like new, do a compression check, if its low its time for a rebuild.
When a topend rebuild is done on a two stroke you will take the cylinder and head off, the cylinder will be checked then honed or bored depending on how worn it is, a new piston will usually be installed, good time to change to a forged piston, new rings, new gaskets, maybe the top of the cylinder or bottom of the head will be milled if it is out of spec. This is also a good time to change your reed petals, they dont last forever and if you got it this far apart may as well do it.
When your rebuild is done and you did a proper brake in and have everything jetted correctly the quad will run lots better than before the rebuild.
