Brand New Scrambler 500 question
#1
Just picked up my Scrambler 500 4x today. Been reading a little about this belt situation. Should I be in low gear range when ascending or descending steep hills? Also I notice when you let off the throttle you can feel the transmission kind of "tug" or slow itself down. Should I be using the brakes instead of coasting into a stop? I dont want to over heat or damage anything. How fast is too fast for low range? I am brand new to automatic quads, any advice appreciated

Don't take this the wrong way, but you REALLY need to read your owner's manual. It will tell you how fast is too fast for low gear. And it might point out to you that Scramblers don't have a low gear. (unless I missed something on mine) Congrats on your new ride, but take some time to get familiar with it.

I have found with past products that sometimes what the manufacturer TELLS you and what other people have learned at the school of "Hard Knocks" can sometimes be VERY DIFFERENT. No, I dont take what you are saying the wrong way at all, and yes I do intend to read the owners manual, probably yet tonight. But while I was looking at the board I couldn't help but notice that there seem to be quite a few guys on here that are dealers and/or mechanics....those guys know the REAL story on what causes part failures. I know I sound like a moron with the questions I asked but I am brand new to here and this is the first time I have ever posted...guess I just wanted to "talk quads" for a bit. Sorry if it seemed dumb

First of all, prepare yourself to become addicted to riding. You're going to love your Scrambler. Mine is a 400, but my friend has a 500 like yours. They are both great quads. On the steep hills you'll need to apply the brakes. The transmission just doesn't slow you down the way a manual shifting quad would. With time you'll get the feel of it.
I'm sure you've read about the belts getting wet. One trick is going into the water slow and steady. Blasting into the water will allow water to splash up and into the belt housing. If you do get your belt wet, put it in neutral and rev the engine a bit. Don't over rev. You'll be able to see the water coming back out of the belt housing exhaust on the left side of the bike. This is the fastest way I have found to dry the belt. Don't attempt to ride while the belt is wet. This can severely damage the belt.
Good luck with your new ride.

Congrads on your new quad. I have a scrambler 400 but also just bought a new scrambler 500 and I like it a lot. I know what you mean about the quad slowing down when letting of the throttle. When I first bought mine I thought I had gotten a EBS clutch by mistake because it slowed down way more than my 400 does without the brake. Now I realize that it slows down like that because it is a 4 stroke and that most 4 strokes have that tug or braking feeling when you let of the throttle. Unfortunately going down hills will still require braking but not nearly as much as if you were driving the 400 scrambler. It's ok, not everyone knows everything about quads and your right about dealers telling you false information. When i went to bye mine, the dealer started telling me all this stuff that was partly true but alot of it was false. I felt like telling him off because he was trying to sell me a quad that I new almost everything about and he had no clue. Some people are a joke. Well have fun with your new machine.
