Opinions wanted on 97 500

Hi all,
I am new to the ATV world but am looking for a Polaris. Aneighbor is selling a 97 Sportsman 500 w/ 1000 miles, winch. It's in great shape but he wants $5000, seems a bit high. My questions are, what would a reasonable price be, is the 97 500 a good bike, and are 1000 miles alot? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

5 Grand?? Tell him to lay off the crack and offer him 3 grand. 1000 miles isn't really much. If the bike has been taken care of it would probably be a good quad but the price is crazy high in my opinion. I got the following info off of NADA.com using the zip code for Grass Valley, California. So you might point this out to your neighbor.
Model: SPORTSMAN 500
Piston Displacement (CCs): 499
Stroke: 4
Cylinders: 1
Speeds: V
Dry Weight: 649
Low Retail: $2,565
Average Retail: $3,370
High Retail: $3,575

About the only thing that really needed watching on the pre-98 sportsmans, are the 4 u-joints in the rear axles. As long as they are tight, they are fine, just don't run them when they start to get loose, or they can snap.
They aren't that expensive to fix, but it is something to be aware of.
