Should I trick out my 250x engine or replace with a 350x engine?

I have an 87' 250x which is in excellent condition for its age.I have the urge to do a make-over on it or either just buy another one and work with it instead, but depending on the route I take, should I just beef up the 250x engine or go with a 350x install?Im limited on funds but I dont necessarily have to go the cheapest route either.I would also like to do some body mods by either running 400ex or 250r plastic if those mods are possible.I am interested in running a 250r or 400ex front suspension and have heard that a 350x swingarm is a direct bolt-on for my frame so that is also considered. If anyone has any suggestions or other information on what I am wanting to do then please reply.I am pretty sure that all my mods can be done but I am new to this so if someone else has done it Id like to know what all is involved. Thanks for your time.

I would say do the 350X motor, 250X's in 87 were known for a week second gear. You dont want to do all those mods and then have to replace the gears. Also the 350X is going to offer alot more power without going to radical and making it unreliable. Plus you get the benefit of 6 gears instead of 5, but you do loose reverse. As for the 400ex shocks up fornt talk to CounrtyParkRacing he just posted on here not to long ago that he made some parts to do the conversion of somethign like that. Also with some fabrication a 250R swingarm will fit and help ALOT in the handlin department. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I used to have a '92 250x and I swapped in the 350x motor. Awesome power in that little bike! It was great to have that much power in a bike that's so easy to throw around. Also, I swapped the swingarm as well, so that should work on your '87, I'm not sure, but I don't think they're any different. As for the plastic, I don't know, I left mine stock. The biggest problem I ran into was the exhaust. I ended up fabricating my own out of the muffler for the 250, and the headpipe for the 350, and I also had to lengthen the the headpipe about 3 inches right where it connects to the head so it would clear the frame. But, they do make and sell an exhaust system for that swap, but I don't know who makes it, you'll just have to look around. Feel free to email me with any questions you might have or you can IM me if you have AOL. My screen name is Cowtit2000. Good luck.

I personaly am doing the 250X for one reason. The 350X hasn't been around for years and years. Parts will become hard to come by as the years go on. What good is it going to do you to have an extra 100cc's and an extra forward gear when you are having a hard time finding parts? This is why I went the 250X route the 250X and the 300EX share almost the exact same engine and you can get parts anywhere. Although I am considering the swingarm swap.
