I have an '88 250R that I can't decide whether to have it ported or not. I have a cool head(170psi), FMF pipe and a Rad vavle. I would like more power(the never ending story), but i'm not sure what porting it would be like. I DON'T want to end up with something that has a 125 dirtbike powerband because I ride mostly in the woods. I also don't want to end up with a low end port job where the motor will no longer rev out. Is there a happy median?? Surely many people on the forum have experience with porting 250r's. Any help would be appreciated.

If i were you ask around for a small engine bulider or sort of small that does a good job, that way they will have a lot of time to spend on yours and not the pros they sponsor. I would go with esr personally. a good port job will do as good as an aftermarket cylinder, you can get one for all around power too. a mx and woods porting job is what they call it. for esr i think its the trx9 portiing.

I'm a little heavier than I'd like to be, and ran into a "not enough juice" problem with my 250R. I wanted a MX powerband (low and mid), but also some top end for dunes, all while running pump gas. Rick "MacDizzy" did the job, and it's exactly what I wanted, very reliable, and plenty of GO, even for a fat guy like me. Good turnaround time, and less money than I thought.

MP Racing did my cylinder for mid/top, but he can port for pretty much anything. He can port the motor for what you want it to do. Highly recommended.

letitsnow, I have the same setup as you basically. My 89 has an FMF pipe, 38MM carb, and a Hy-Tech reed spacer, and has been mid ported. The great thing about porting is that you can have your motor done for the exact way you ride. Low end porting, mid porting, or top end. Mine was done by Clarksville Performance. They are a local shop, and they did a great job. My 250R pulls quite a bit harder than my Banshee now.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've decided to buy a spare cylinder and have that one ported. This way if I don't like it, I can switch back. Thanks again.
