I rode one of these machines yesterday at a nearby dealership. I was pretty surprised at the power that this little 250 had! Can anyone give me any advice on the 2-stroke vs. 4-stroke engine. I've owned 2-stroke jet ski's but those don't get muddy, dusty, etc...only wet! In my last post several of you had good things to say about the xplorer 400. The 2-stroke is the only thing that worries me. Can someone give me some clarification???

I have a 1995 4X4 scrambler 400, I have never had anything go wrong except cv boot on the front that I ripped with a spike, and I bought the first battery for it last year.

Don't let the fact that it is a two stroke, worry you. A two stroke engine is just as durable and long lasting as the four strokes as long as you do the proper maintance. I also believe that their is less to go wrong with a two stroke because their is no valves, rocker arms, push rods, cam shafts, timing gears and chains. The two stroke engine just doesn't have near as many moving parts. That stock 250cc engine can putt around all day without giving you any problems. Or you could race that thing down the trails all day without any problems either. That 250cc engine as been with Polaris since Polaris first made four wheelers and is a time tested and truely good motor. It is not a high performance motor but is a reliable motor with decent power.

This motor on that four wheel drive chasis is a relatively good combo. You still have the option of two or four wheel drive at the push of a button. They also have a fairly nice riding suspension for a utility quad.

For the money, I think it is hard to find a machine that offers the capabilities this 250 Xplorer has.

By the way, the only engine work I've had to do on the 250cc engine is replace an exhaust gasket.

I had a 1993 250 Trail Boss 2X4 (same engine as the Xplorer 250) and it was a TOUGH machine. I had it eight years and put one piston in the engine with hundreds and hundreds of hours of riding. It is an easy machine to maintain and ride. I think the Xplorer really offers alot of machine for the price. I spent less than $500 on the machine in the eight years I owned it (including tires, filters, oil).

Tips to a long lasting 2 stroke 4Wheeler:

Keep air filter clean

Use only Polaris two-stroke engine oil

Grease machine twice a year or after deep water riding

Keep chain adjusted.
