Info on Sportsman 500

Just got a 1996 sportsman 500 4x4,and have a few questions,I havnt drove it much but I have yet to hear or see the fan come on yet,is this normal,also I have noticed that when I take it off my truck I have a hard time getting it into gear,in fact just sitting in my garage for a few days it was real tough to get (shift) into gear,what can I do to adjust this this?? thank you in advance

As for your fan not coming on, it doesn’t run constantly it kicks on at a certain temperature then kicks back off. Be sure that the coolant level is full and purge any air from the system. Check the fan switch; think it’s on top of the radiator for ‘96’ make sure harness is connected. You can disconnect the harness, attach a jumper wire to the switch, turn on ignition and see if fan works. If the fan works and the coolant level is full, chances are it’s the fan control switch.

It also sounds like you need to adjust your shifter linkage. You’ll need to disconnect the rod ends from the bell cranks. Put the shifter in neutral and make sure the bell cranks are in the neutral position. Adjust the low range rod (inner) until it’s centered over the bell crank and install it. Turn the rod clockwise until you feel resistance, and then turn it counterclockwise until the same resistance is felt (count the revolutions). Turn it back clockwise half of the revolutions. Now do the other rod…you’re done. Hope this helps, good luck
