Take the fill screw out, turn the wheel until the the hole is at the 4 or 8 O'clock position and add fluid until it starts to flow back out.

Has anyone else been told by their local mechanic that you can use ATF instead of Polaris hub fluid? Said either Mercron or Dextron was ok. Also, does anyone know of a substitute for gearcase lubricant.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is what I use in the front hubs. I found out about it in one the threads on this forum quite some time ago. Seems to work better than the Polaris oil as far as the front hubs sticking and staying engaged also.

I was told to fill at the 3 o'clock position by my dealer.

Manual says 4 o'clock, though.

showmethemud,
The shop manual calls for API GL5 80-90 gearlube in both front and rear, as a substitute.

Hmmmm, I don't think you would want to use heavy gear oil in the hubs. If he has a Scrambler, then he has only front hubs needing oil, anyhow. Only grease in the rear. The front hubs need a thin oil - probably the reason the ATF can be used. I have no seen a shop manual stating to use 80-90 in the hubs.

When i was reading through my owner's manual(i do not have the shop manual for the SP500)it reads as if you have to change fluid in both the front & rear gear cases using GL5 80-90 Weight gear lube AND also there is the transmission oil to be changed that uses Polaris Premium Synhetic Gearcase Lubricant (PN 2871478). I asked my dealer about it because i could only find two drain plugs(one for the front gearcase & one for the transmission). He said that only the front gearcase using 80-90W gear oil and the tranny fluid using the Gearcase Lubricant (PN2871478) needed to be changed. The owners manual, the way it was written, was misleading. It was telling me that there were 3 differant drain plugs. Did not say that the SP500 only had two. I was wonderng if there was a substitute for the transmission (Gearcase Lubricant PN 2871478). I'm aware that the 80-90W gear oil isn't used in the front hubs, only Polaris hub oil or ATF is recommended.
