I have purchased all the plastics, seat and Lonestar 250R seatlatch for doing this conversion. I could probably figure out how to get it all attached, but would rather hear from those who have already done this. It looks like it will work, but obviously things will need to be modified. Like on top of the sub frame, where the plastic rests on the frame rails, its wider on the 400EX so I am wondering if I should extend the width of the frame rails or something. Also, I need to build brackets for the front fenders to attach correctly. Any knowlege you have on this subject that would aid me would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Why would you want to do this, the stock R plastics look so much better. This reminds me of these guys that put Type-R stickers and wheels all over their honda civics.

Getting back to the 400ex plastics, also every R I have seen with 400ex plastics has a nasty gap where the cowling meets the tank. The only thing I like better about the 400ex plastic is the light setup, if you have a light.

 

I asked for help on mounting the plastics, not for someone to pick apart my idea and tell me what they think about it.

If you must know, and believe me, this is a no brainer. 250R plastics retail are well over 450 dollars, compaired to EX which is 150 , but actually I got it for free, one of the many advantages of working at a honda shop.
But then your going to say, yeah but Maier, No never ever would I put that crap on anything that I own. I have pride in my machine, and Maier quality is not suitable for me.
Now again I ask does anyone have suggestions on how to do this, not snigh remarks.

Actually, putting the plastic on the R does require alot more work than what the magazines made it seem. Yes, you should weld some tabs on the subframe so the plastic can rest on them. The front seat mounts that have the little rubber cushions and are attached to the frame should be cut off and rewelded so they go on the opposite sides- kinda hard to explain, but if you think about it, the seat will only go on if you move these mounts a certain way. Go ahead and cut the plastic gas tank cover in the shape of a U also- the gas cap won't clear without it. The front plastic is kinda hard to get lined up to look right. We actually did this part last. We welded the mounts directly to the frame. Patience and alot of pre-setup and you'll get those fenders on right the first time. Hope this helps.

 

Thank you for your response, as far as welding , I believe I will drill and tap holes and bolt down the tabs, so that if later I decide to go back to R plastics, I can. Maybe your R is a different year model, but on my 88, the front rubber mounts for the seat are in the correct location, a little side to side play but they are in the right direction. The side to side play will be taken away if you switch the front seat mounts around. Every 400ex plastic conversion on any year 250r that I have ever seen has this done. I'm not trying to say it won't work, just that the seat won't fit as good. Good luck!!
