I'm very rough on my quad, I try to go up any hillclimber I see or jump any jump, I just do alot of crazy things on my quad. Because of this i flip it alot and the last time i broke the steering stem right off. I look up aftermarket stem and found a good stem is $300.00 dollars.I do'nt have 300 dollar so i though i would make my own.
What I did was cut the base of the steering since thats the hardest part to make. I strip all the paint off it and clean it. I obtain a peice of 4130 chromly tubing that measures 26"x1.5"x.083". My stock stem is 24"x.875"x.083 mild steel. This gives me a 2" taller stem and a .625 thicker shaft. I made a jig to keep every thing sraight and square.
I T.I.G. welded the shaft to the base. Then I used 1" tubing and copyed the lonestar design making a kinda "H" shape top peice. Making sure every things level, sraight, square. since i copy the top part of the lonestar stem, I found there anti-shock clamp bar thats fits the over size bars like T2, Pro-tapers from a friend. I had to adjust the top part a little to make it fit, but it worked great.Well the last part is the is the extra size of the shaft. The stock bushing only fits a .875" tubing, so I had to a bushing to fit my 1.5" tubing. Well i fould a bushing off a part of the truck suspension thats fits 1.5". I made a clamp to fit my bigger new bushing. I bolted it all up and it fit great and the thing came out straight. It ended up 2" talles and about a 1" forward.
I only wondering if the stem is to strong? will it break the frame if i roll it? Will it be rougher on my arms because its stiffer? Its weights more than a stock stem. But i know it won't break or bend the next time it rolls down a hill.
PLEASE RESPOND WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU GUYS ARE PRETTY SMART OUT THERE
