I have an 87 Honda 250X and it started leaking gas.I replaced the fuel line and had it temporarily fixed but the leak has started again.I have tried to prevent the leak by turning the gas off after a ride but it still leaks out.I have lost a whole tank of gas due to this.I know the line itself is not leaking and the leak doesnt seem to come from the tank.Does anyone have any suggestions.Thanks.

Sounds like your petcock has a loose connection at the tank. You can try tighting it without taking the gas tank off but to really get to it you'll should take the tank off and tighten it. If it comes loose again I would recommend using lock tight any other kind of sealent has a chance of getting into your gas.

If you are still leaking gas with the petcock turned to off. These are the 3 things that I would check.
1. Is the petock lose(probiblity not the cause, but check)
2. The petock needs to be rebuilt(rubber piece with 3 holes is diried out)
3. The steel gas tank has a hole in it.

tprender has some really good points but I would check the petcock tightness first. I had the same problem before with the petcock turned to off I would still leak gas because it was loose where it screws into the tank. If that is not the problem then I would check what tprender said.

I seen a lot of small cracks in those steel tanks, a little JBweld will fix it if thats the problem. You may check with Clark Industries, I think that make a plastic replacement tank...
