Ok,I heard the term pipes "glowing" yesterday WTF does that mean??
What does it look like? Does it screw up your quad in any way? Oh yeah, and when I buy my 400EX when it comes in as stock is it already properly jetted?? I live on the Ms gulf coast.

When the pipe is "Glowing" it usually means you have a very lean jetted carb, causing things to heat up faster than normal. When you get your EX, it should be jetted for your area if you are buying new.

Icav, you ever seen the burner on a stove after it's been on high for a few minutes? Yeah... that's about what your pipe would look like, maybe not QUITE as bright... but still, glowing red, and VERY VERY hot.
As lt already said, it nearly always means that you're jetted quite lean. If your pipe ever glows, I'd recommend turning off the engine immediately before things heat up a little bit too much... and we all know what happens then...

This is common with some machines, even when they are jetted properly. A raptor will do this with aftermarket pipes and proper jetting, verified on a dyno with the exhaust sensors. My Yamaha YZ426 does this, and the jetting is stock and spot on. Some high performance motors, this does not include a stock 400ex, create very high exhaust temperatures as a result of high compression ratios. You won't see it unless you let it sit and idle for extended periods of time. If it is doing this while you are riding hard, you most likely have a jetting issue that needs immediate corrrection.

A friend said he saw a 400EX with a "glowing pipe" at night one evening after it pulled into the parking lot at the dunes after having had to tow another quad in. I would imagine it's engine had to work pretty hard.

I thought it was kinda strange too.
Maybe not as strange as I though??

Ive seen that happen to a friends (Rapzilla) Raptor. When he took it out in the winter the header started to "glow" after a short amount of time. Mind you I think the problem was that it was jetted lean.

The pipes on a 400ex will glow if you let it idle too long during warm-up. The header pipes are single-wall. When I bought mine, the mechanic at the dealer said that the pipes might glow during warm-up. I called 2 other dealers, and the mecanic's told me the same thing. I've personally only seen my pipes glow once, and that was the first time I started it up. After I rejetted the carb and put a higher flowing pipe on, the bike runs cooler.
