A hydraulic clutch has a hydraulic master cylinder up on your clutch lever which has a hose connecting it to the hydraulic slave cylinder down on the transmission. When you pull the lever, hydraulic pressure is applied to the actuating rod on the transmission which disengages the clutch.

The cable type is similar. You have a cable connected to the clutch lever and when you pull it, the cable pulls the actuating rod on the transmission which disengages the clutch.

The hydraulic system is more pricey and a bit more complicated mechanically, than the cable system.

The hydraulic system is easier to operate with less resistance in pulling in the clutch lever.

One has no advantage over the other in terms of maintenance. You will eventually have to replace a cable no matter how often you lube it, but a hydraulic system, when used as the method to operate a clutch, will require fluid changes often. Especially if you plan to race because the more times you use the clutch in a short period of time, it will cause the fluid to get hot enough to actually boil. When this happens, you end up with spongy clutch operation and air pocketsin the line. Same thing that happens on the brake systems of quads.

Both? How can i have both? Or do u mean some come in with cable and some hydro? I think i'll take the cable. I don't need some cushy hydro clutch.

I'd rather have a hydro clutch myself, but thats opinion only. I'd say that by now it would be hard finding a Cannibal that DOESN'T have one, as the cable actuated ones came on the early Cannibal with Ohlins. The only positive to a Cable clutch is, a clutch cable is easy to replace, and cheap.

You maintain the system the same as you would your brakes.

If you do alot of racing, you will want to change the clutch fluid about every 4 races for motocross and about every 2 races for cross country.

Your service manual will have detailed instructions on each step. It isn't a big deal at all. You can do it in about 15 minutes taking your time.

The Magura hydraulic clutch is flawless. It's the same setup that KTM uses on all their dirtbikes. Since KTM went to this setup in 1998, I have only sold one rebuild kit for them. Don't worry about it being reliable because it is.
