Well I got back from a ride at Wayne National Forest and the quad died again and left me stranded for a few hours before I could get it back to the truck. I got it home and checked the compression and it was around 30psi. I am going to put a new top end in it and then it is going up for sale. I need some help in trying to figure out what would be a good price for it. These are all the mods that have been done to it.

K&N air filter and airbox mod
bored .040 wiseco piston and rings
ported
bigger carb (not sure of the size 35mm comes to mind)
hpd trail mod clutch kit, pipe and silencer
hpd billet steering dampener
DG bumpers front and rear
DG skid plate
Renthal bars
cut off switch
Hole shots (2inches smaller diameter) on ITP aluminum .190 rims (rear)
Bandit pure sports (2 inches smaller diameter) on ITP aluminum beadlock rims (front)
Aftermarket seat cover
Works Performance shocks up front
DID chain
and many more addons
and all the stock part to go with it

I was thinking of trading it for a 4 stroke sport quad like a honda 300 or 400ex or a yamaha warrior or something or asking $4000.

What does everyone thing is that a decent price or should I make some adjustments.

2000 scrambler 400 2x4 (up for sale as soon as it is fixed)
Giving up on the Polaris brand

Is your head stock compression? It sounds like a blown head gasket more than a ring problem. If your running higher compression then you should step up in octane. It looks like your bike has quite a few mods. You have to expect a few problems before you get it tuned and running right. If you wanna play, you gotta pay.

If the motor was even close to stock I might be able to understand you complaining to Polaris about their product.

Balzak,

Check out the cylinder. Does it have aluninum on the walls? If so, you didn't let the machine warm up properly before take off. The problem is that the piston expands before the cylinder does and coats the cylinder with aluminum, which jams the rings open, which leads to no compression.

Frankly the best way to solve this problem is to use a coated piston. Swaintech coated mine and I haven't had a bit of trouble with it. Get the ceramic coating on top and the "Poly-Moly" on the sides. It will cost you about $50 over the cost of a new piston, but believe it or not, it works!

Have the cylinder bored and honed to .003" over the size of the piston.

i couldn't agree with you more. i made engine mods like that to a jet ski years ago and it gave me trouble all the time to.

Balzak- i wouldn't try those mods to a concervative Honda motor or you may be writing the same post in the Honda forum next! LOL
later,

BarelyLegal, mtpockets, you are exactly correct. Why would anyone even begin to blame Polaris for the machine breakdown in this situation? Everything Polaris tried to make the thing reliable has been taken away by all these modifications.

That sounds like a great suggestion Mike. Ceramic coating will also help produce more power. It retains more heat in the combustion chamber instead of sinking through the piston. I wish I would've thought about that when I rebuilt my motor a few weeks ago, especially if its only $50.00. Where can you get this done?

I pulled the jug off last night and it looks as though a ring broke and scored a groove from the top of the piston to the second ring which just lets all the compression by the rings. The jug looks perfectly fine, I will hone it a little and it will be alright. I am just a little upset with the parts that I have had to replace, here is a small list just to name a few since I have had the quad:

20 sets of back brake pads at least
both front a-arms
front wheel hub and bearings
rear axle
rear axle bearings
rear wheel hub
fan and fan assembly
rear grab bar
rear caliper rebuild
piston and rings 3 times now
chain 3 times (because of the infamous swing arm bolts)
front sprocket
rear brake rotor
tie rod ends twice

these are just a few of the things that I have replaced and I am sure that I am forgetting quite a bit more than that. I am just fed up with it. The Polaris just can't handle the way I ride apparently and I am done trying to make it cope with my riding style. I am just going to find a bike that is a little more suited to my style. I bought the bike late in the year in 2000 and for 2 years now it has been nothing but a piece of sh@t (excuse my french). I have put at least $2000 into it on top of what I paid for it and I don't think that I should have these headaches. Polaris is fine if you don't ride it hard but if you do I think people should look into another manufacturer (just my .02 from my experience, not that I have a whole lot).

I think its time to sell the Polaris and pick up a 400ex. I bought one last spring and they are awesome for riding at Wayne. The trails there are perfectly suited for the ex. We were down there on opening weekend and a group of 400ex's took a wild ride through the new straitsville loop. I am constantly amazed at that machines handling ability and I am never for a loss of power while trail riding. This is not meant to be a Polaris bash (I still own two of them), but frankly for the type of fast riding that I do at Wayne, the Polaris is just not suited for the job. Quadfather (who used to post here), sold his Sport and picked up a used 400ex and hasn't been happier. If you want to join us for a ride, I will be back down at Camp Ohio on June 21 - 23. You are welcome to join us. We have a great group of riders from all skill levels.

I am not complaing about the polaris in this situation alone but with all of the other items that I have had to replace on top of it, I think I have reason to. Just look at the items in the last post that I have had to replace and tell me that I don't have a reason to bash Polaris. If you can't see why I am upset then why don't you be kind enough to find someone to buy this Scrambler from me so that I can't hurt it poor feelings anymore.

I guess I'll list the streetbike now until the Suzuki Z400 comes in
92' Ninja ZX11 Yosh pipe and stage one kit
176MPH&139HP at the rear wheel
