Hey Folks,

I have a very simple question. What is the best GPS (brand, model, accessories) for riding ATV's and locating trails and backroads on built in mapping?

I am really interested in the unit which comes with the most built in mapping which might include the Mena, Arkansas area (Wolf Pen Gap).

After looking at all the options on ebay and other internet sites, I am more confused than when I was trying to pick out my first ATV ( I couldn't make up my mind so I bought a Yamaha and a Honda)

I decided that rather than believe all the advertising hype, I would ask the folks who use them.

I would like a complete package including the unit, handle bar mounting bracket, GPS to pc cable, 22 or 24 megs of memory, waterproof, and highway, city, & backwoods trail mapping on one CD.

I am expecting the cost to be between $400.00 and $500.00.

Regards

Ted

Most mapping units come with whats called a "base map". This will have major highways but not trails. I bought the Garmin eTrex Vista (http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVista/index.html). It has 24 Mb. I also bought Garmin MetroGuide (http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/MG.html) for my more detailed maps. It has trails like the ones in Mena. The name would imply it only has cities and stuff but the trail maps are great. For instance about 80% of the trails in Broken Bow are on there.

You can go here: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/ and on the right hand side choose the type of software you are interested. It will then bring up the map from that software so you can see before you buy.

I would have to agree with TEXMud on the Vista. I use a legend and the Garmin map source CD for detail. I plan to move up to a vista when I get the cash. Main difference between Legend and Vista is the memory size and compass.

For the mount go with the RAM mount. Great setup.

Dusty 1......I use a Garmin III Plus and it works great. I purchased it from Boatersworld.com for $279..(Thanks BlueLeader) Best on-line purchase I ever made. I custom made a mount to hold the GPS and it works great. I'm still a novice using the GPS but get around pretty well. The Garmin GPS III Plus is very easy to use. I'm still unsure of the type map software that is best for me. I've heard that TOPO maps would provide more detailed trail information than the street map software. I'm having fun with my Garmin III Plus and hope to get more proficient with it each time I go riding. If you give me your e-mail address I'll send you pictures of my GPS mount. Good Luck...

Hey Folks,

Thanks for the info. I would love to see the pictures. Send them to me at
tedln@directway.com. Remove the "t" from directway and it will go.

Thanks
