Well yesterday I did about two hours worth of maintenance of my bike...changed fuel filter, spec'd bolts, cleaned and oiled air filter, spec'd and oiled chain, greased the ball joints(waste of time), and put lithium grease on all moving parts.

After I met my buddies to go riding for a couple of hours, it was running really well... a little snappier cuz I think the fuel filter was really dirty (had been about 13 hours on the factory one). After about 2 hours of tight trails and some sand pits we headed back to the trucks... this is when it started dying, if I would let it idle it would die right away, if I would pull in the clutch and let the revs drop it would die. It still ran good when the I was on the throttle.

What are your guy's thoughts, is this the famous stalling that everyone is talking about? I don't know???

I thought it might be the clutch isn't engaging all the way, which is pulling revs down and killing it?
Maybe the spark plug isn't getting a good spark, on its way to being fouled and needs to be changed?
Or the idle is a little slow and should be turned up some?
Or the bike was never leaned and is still running a little rich from the factory?

ANY answers? It had never done this before...

Thanks,
Josh

Dex,
I had the same trouble a few weeks ago and it turned out that I believe the clutch was not fully engaging. To fix my problem, I adjusted that red adjuster at the clutch lever until it was all the way as far from the grip as possible. I am no expert, but maybe it wasn't getting full range of motion when I had it adjusted in so close to the bars. I know it had fluid in the rezzie, and didn't see anything else wrong with it...and best of all the problem went away........JIM

I went to GNCC yesterday and had stalling problem too. On the last lap (a little over 2 hours in) 1 mile from the finish line mine stalled and would not restart. It acted like it ran out of gas, but there was still fuel in the tank. The fan was running, so I waited til it stopped and tried to start it, not luck, but the fan came back on. This is when I knew that I overheated the quad. So after about 5-7 minutes of the fan running it started back up and I was able to finish the race.

So first thing I would do is jump back on that machine and see if I runs fine after it has cooled off. If the overheating was the problem add some antifreeze aditive the lowers the Temp. or add an in-line supercooler and clean the radiator out, if mud is in the cooling fins it will overheat.

If that wasn't the problem check your negative cable on the battery, I've heard that can they loosen up and cause a stalling problem.

Also if you haven't had it done already reroute your fuel line to the new route so that it doesn't vapor lock. See cannondale's site for the correct routing.

Let us know what was the problem and the solution as soon as up know. Goodluck

Get out your car stuff, and use the induction coil for the tach. It should just clamp on the spark plug lead. Of course you will have to have one first, if not Sear, PEP Boys, Kragen, etc.

Opps, just remembered the coil is in the connector.

I don't know, Knowsalot, time to do some of that Knowsalot stuff.

I had the same problem at a MI Harescramble this weekend. Mine died four times. It died everytime while on the gas-NOT idling. The first time it died and re-started after gliding to a stop at the first touch of the starter. Same thing the second time. Third time required two attempts. Last time I cranked it at least 10 times 2-4 seconds each and then it refired. Two weeks ago it died while on the trail and refired after sitting 15 minutes----It wasn't overheated and the fan turned on breifly with a hit of the starter button. Mine would not "prime" the system. Everytime the system primes it starts.. Any suggestions????

I have had all kinds of problems with my quad. At first it was fouling plugs left and right, a quick moto remap with the cold start map installed fixed that. Once the plug fouling stopped the stalling started. It would stall when it got warm (the stalling happened in 2nd and 3rd mid throttle, and it felt like there was air in the gas line or it was out of gas) it would start right back up but though. With the operating code updated (see cannondales service bulletin) the stalling stopped. Great its time to ride worry free. Not yet! After revising the op code the battery started loosing it's charge. If I stalled or shut it down on the trail I would have to jump start it (thank god for my buddies trusty or get it towed out 400ex). This occurred after the quad warmed up (my luck it was 7mi. into a trail). It turns out that all models previous to 5/16/02 do not have the proper stator wire shielding and this causes the battery voltage to drop when the quad gets warm. Again, see cannondale service bulletins. It's kind of embarrasing when people stop to check out your cannondale and it's always broken down or you have to ride with a tool kit and jumper cables. I hope this helps you guys. Good Luck!!!

Man i hate to hear about the problems some of you guys have had! Hang in there, I'm sure they will get worked out.
Just wanted to add my experience here so that readers don't think all cannons have these problems. My 'bull is 7 months old, approx. 175 hours on her, 20th off the production line and has NEVER failed to start. It has only stalled due to rider error. I just replaced the original spark plug a couple weeks ago cause i thought i should. I've had a couple small problems but nothing that kept me from riding. I really love my quad! It do ROCK.

When I washed my speed off I noticed that the postive terminal on the fuel pump was loose. I think this my have been part of the reason it stall and took so long to restart at the last GNCC. I haven't had a chance to ride it much, since I tighten up the connection, but I did notice a difference in it. I would check and maybe loctite this connection. I'll let everyone know after the next national, the 15th of this month, If it does it again.
