both bikes are pretty much the same other than the swingarm is a couple of inches shorter on the '89 and it is alloy rather than steel. as far as mods...a 38mm. carb some mild porting and a high-rev pipe and you will eat banchees for breakfast

and you guys can't forget about solid red plastic and a cowl mounted headlight on the 88/89 250r's. didn't they change the whole motor design?? the 86's were the same as the atc's motor right?? well, i know the pipes are different for the two.

I know the swingarm was slightly shorter on the 88/89. Also, I believe the 87-89 had a longer rod than the 86 but don't quote me on that.

THE 86 HAS ADJUSTABLE CAMBER
THE 89 HAS ONE INCH WIDER ,
ONE INCH FOWARD A-ARMS AND
ONE INCH SHORTER SWINGAEM
THEY MADE THE CHANGES IN 89
TO BETTER SUITE MX TRACKS
I HAVE A 86 DONE TOP TO BOTTOM
SET UP FOR THE WOODS
( WHERE THE REAL RIDING IS DONE)
THIS THING IS SCARY FAST
HOPE I COULD HELP

I know that the clutch was beefed up on the 89 and I think 88-89's have a longer rod, cosmetics are minor but numorous.

The 87-89 have a long rod, 86 Short rod.

The 88-89 have shorter swing-arm (Better Turning).

The 86-87 rear motor mount is mounted to the swing-arm pivot, whereas the 88-89 mounts to the frame.

The 88-89 has a better front-end geometry. (Better Turning, and Handling for MX)

The 88-89 is lighter, at the expense of actually not being quite as strong (No big deal when a frame is only supposed to be raced on for 2 seasons; who knew they would last 10 seasons or more/ as a freind pointed out though, how many motorcycles frames could hold up to that much abuse?).

The 89 has an updated clutch, which the others can have done for about $60.00.

There are other small changes like headlight location and plastic color, but they don't affect performance.

Basically racers like the 88-89, whereas duners actually like the '86.

What are the updated clutch part numbers?
What parts are involved?
Does it matter if I use a Hinson Basket?

thanks,
phil

The updated clutch parts can be bought at any Honda dealer. It is actually a set with a new front clutch cover (Not basket, but the cover the clutch springs go through), push-rod, and bearing. It may be called the clutch push-rod assembly, but I'm not totally sure if that is the correct term used. Thats all that is neede to make the clutch action smoother.
