On my 93 warrior I have my chain adjustment setting back as far as it goes. How do I tell whether the chain that I'm using needs to be replaced, or whether I need to take 1 or 2 links out of the chain. It is an o-ring chain.

 

I believe that if you take the chain off & lay it flat, it should not be able to make a complete circle when bending it. If it has alot of slack in it when you do this, it should be replaced.

 

Sounds like your chain is stretched to it's maximum. I would throw new sprockets and a high quality DID 520 Gold X ring on it. Better safe than sorry.

 

If it's the original chain and it's as far as it can go. Time for a new one, you got a lot of use out of that one so treat your machine to a new chain and sprockets.

The test for a stretched chain is to adjust it to specs if possible. Grasp a link of the chain at the rear sprocket at about 3 o'clock. Try to pull the link away from the sprocket and if you see 1/2 a tooth, the chain is gone. Of course if you have used all the adjustment and the chain is still out of spec, you already know the chain is toast. Check both sprockets for hooked teeth before installing the new chain or the new chain will be toast also.
By the way, removing links is just an emergency band- aid and won't alter the fact that the chain is shot and still stretched beyond reasonable use.
